A graduate of our schools exhibits schoolwork demonstrating a focused course of study and preparedness for immediate employment, advanced training, or college.
It is important to prepare graduates for their goals after graduation. Focusing on students’ interests is an important factor in this preparation. New York schools have gone beyond preparing students for college or a career with their six year technology schools. Students here can graduate high school with an associate’s degree from a local technical school. This system allows public schools to provide high school education to students while preparing them for college work and then teach college material to students to prepare them for a career after graduation.

As a graduate of the public school system in South Carolina, I am grateful my high school prepared me for college. When I graduated, I was worried about moving away from home and making new friends but I was not concerned about doing well in college level classes.
The AP classes my high school offered prepared me for the rigors of college. I found that my AP English class was more challenging than my freshman English course in college. AP classes taught me how to study appropriately for upper level classes and gave me skills that I still use today as a college Junior. I was fortunate to have this experience. Many students in my college did not have the same opportunity I had which caused many of those students to take after school tutoring on how to study and prepare for college classes.
The focused AP classes not only prepared me for college, but helped me achieve my goals while attending college. AP classes gave me numerous college credit hours which will allow me to graduate early and save money for law school.
If I was unable to take classes like these, I don't know what I would have done. Even though I was always a good student, I would have been lost in college classes just because I did not know the techniques to succeed. I believe that every student should have the opportunity to take focused classes.
A focused course of study is a new idea that is similar to what colleges do in making students pick a major. Partnerships with technical colleges and community businesses could help students to take classes in different focuses to try and pick one. I think the goal should be to help students pick a focus by the time they graduate.
