Children and young people flourish as a result of personalized learning experiences that have relevance and meaning for them.
Michelle Gilmer, from Pendleton High School in Anderson District 4, was named teacher for the year for 2011. Before teaching math, Gilmer worked as a engineer which gave her real world experience she was able to bring to students. Gilmer was able to make math enjoyable and relatable to students.

Wade Hampton High School of Greenville, S.C. was selected as a 2012 NASSP Breakthrough School due to their academic achievements. Only ten schools nationally receive this award. This award honors schools with large student populations in poverty stricken areas for achieving academic success and improvement.
A requirement of this award is personalization that provides every student specialized attention. To measure academic success and improvement, scores on state assessment tests must increase for at least three years straight. This award shows that personalization does allow children to flourish. Despite the circumstances of the school, personalization is always possible and leads to meaningful results.

No meaningful learning will take place until a 'meaningful relationship' has been established between student and teacher.
Also,students must be ENGAGED as they learn!
These are trying times, but times to grow and develop. We must all join the team of educators, mentors, and life givers to give our children what they deserve.
When you personalize learning experiences, you acknowledge individual differences. You address the strengths and weaknesses of every child. You find out what interests the child and allow them choice in content and learning style.

In high school I participated in a senior project that allowed me to pursue an interest I have always had. This was a great experience and I think every high school should have a senior project program.
Personalized education is incredible. Coming recently from a school system where the educators catered to a somewhat personalized learning environment. Being a person who finds it difficult to just sit in a classroom and learn, I feel this would be a great necessity to all school systems.
